PROGRAM NOTE
Passacaglia was commissioned by The National Flute Association for their 49th annual convention. The piece is a standard passacaglia in which each variation has the same chord progression and passes through different characters throughout.
PERFORMANCE NOTES
“Improv Flutter Drone”: From mm. 131 – 150, play unmeasured, vary speeds from wide and slow to fast, contrasting with others while maintaining pulse, so that the overall random speeds will create a wobbly fluttering drone.
Boxed notation: From mm. 133 – 150, these figures should be repeated at will for the duration of the bar, until the next harmony change, and for the duration of the solid line.
