Cantorum is a font that allows the user to easily input plainchant notation into Dorico using simple combinations of letters and numbers. It takes advantage of Dorico’s powerful lyric spacing options to allow the user full control over the appearance of the score. It also uses several complex OpenType font features that Dorico supports natively.
Easy to install
Installation is easy: you just install the Cantorum font on your Mac or Windows computer in the usual manner, ready for use.
A complete and versatile system for plainchant notation in Dorico
Cantorum is built for use in Dorico. Use in other software may be possible, but is not currently supported.
Plainchant relies on a rich and complex system of notation comprised of neumes, which are able to communicate a wide range of expression.
Neumes are entered using a dedicated line of lyrics: single pitches are input as simple numbers, and melismatic neumes are input as y,x, where y is the reference pitch and x is the interval contour of the melisma:
Cantorum can be used in Dorico alongside standard music notation, such as in the 1906 English Hymnal.
There is a rich array of neumes available, representing every shape in the standard chant repertoire. Here are a few possible forms of the porrectus, for example:
Neumes can be easily grouped into complex melismas with full control over their spacing, as well as duration dots, icta, and episema:
Cantorum can also notate puncta cava and linea puncta, including zero-width forms that allow multiple puncta to be input at the same rhythmic position:
Clefs, custodes, brackets, and accidentals are also easy to input as well.
